A Happy Amateur Explores the World and its Oceans

Alaska Above and Below
John and I spent seventeen days in southern Alaska, visiting Anchorage, Katmai Island, Denali National Park and a little bit of Juneau, then diving the Inland Passage. We were REALLY lucky to have fantastic warm, sunny weather, as we had heard that rain and cold is the norm in this area. After our land trip, the real adventure began. We boarded a beautifully refurbished tugboat that was built in 1913 and headed out from Juneau to dive the Inland Passage, ending up in Ketchikan eleven days later. The Nautilus Swell and her crew gave us one of the best dive experiences ever! Water temp was a bracing 45º, but there was so much to see we hardly minded the chill of the water. One day we motored up to see a calving Glacier and swam in the icebergs. Water was 37º but the crew was serving scotch and champagne... who cares! An amazing, awesome dive trip!
